*Rules and terminology

TERMINOLOGY: 
All Skate All competitors in that division share the floor and dance, a bit like social dancing
Spotlights  Each competitor or competing couple take it in turns to shine in the middle, a bit like a jam circle
BPM Beats Per Minute, indicating the tempo of a song. For example 140 BPM is quite slow while 315 BPM is super fast
Prelims Preliminary Rounds or Heats, the first stage of the division from which finalists are picked
Finals The Final Round or last stage of the division from which 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners are picked.
8 Eights 8 lots of 8 counts, for example the time it takes to dance 8 swing outs in a row. 
Strictly Means that you can only dance strictly the type of dance. For example a Strictly Lindy is for Lindy Hop only. You cannot dance Balboa, Shag or Blues. You dance with a partner of your own choosing. 
Mix & Match Mix & Match The partnerships are selected randomly on the day and at the time of the competition

Invitational Lindy Hop

For dancers who are judges at the festival or who placed 1 2 or 3rd in the All Star division 2018, or anyone who is invited by the organisers. See full rules below (110 – 240bpm)

SHOWCASE

 

  • Your team will perform the same 60 second routine in the prelims and in the finals.
  • All 60 Second Routines must be 60 to 66 seconds of performing. If there is a non-performance intro to your track this is not included in your time allowance. You must either cut the track before you submit it to us, or indicated the time code that the track must be paused.
    For example:
    – permitted: The Jammers – 5 second intro (with no dancing/acting), 62 seconds of dancing – total 67 second long track
    – not permitted: Philip & Joe – 15 second intro with dancing/acting, 60 seconds of main part of the song – total 75 second long track
    – not permitted: Harlem Crew – 10 second intro (with no dancing/acting), 70 seconds of dancing – total 80 second long track

Open to anyone, except those who have placed in a competition before! This is a competition for solo dancers, pairs, couples, and teams to showcase any vintage dance style. At least 80% of your group must be Rising Star dancers and have never placed in a competition before.

For this competition you will provide your own music and choreography of your choice.

For dancers who have placed in a competition before. This is a competition for solo dancers, pairs, couples, and teams to showcase any vintage dance style.

Heel Slide

Open to anyone and usually a lot of fun. Simply line up, take a run up if you need and slide! Slides on the heels or flat foot are all permitted

 



Important RULES!

  • You must have entry to the parties in order to be able to compete. This means that you will need to purchase either a Ballroom pass or a Party pass for the night the comp you are entering to be able to compete.
  • If you are entering a solo routine in the Showcase but you have placed in a Lindy Hop competition you will need to enter the All Star Showcase and vise versa.
  • You can choose Rising Star if you have never placed in a partnered Lindy Hop competition before, including Strictly, Mix and Match or a partnered couple or team Showcase. You can enter this division if you placed in Up & Comers in 2018.
  • You have to choose the All Star division if you placed 1st, 2nd or 3rd in the Rising Star Strictly or Mix and Match the previous year.
  • If you’ve placed in any Strictly, Mix and Match Lindy Hop or partnered couple or team Showcase competition you need to compete in All Star (or invitational as appropriate)
  • If you’ve placed in any Solo or Solo Showcase competition you can compete in whichever level partnered division you prefer if none of the above rules apply to you
  • If you are a teacher of Lindy Hop or are a Troupe member who has never placed in any competition as per the above rules as an individual or as a team member you can compete in whichever level partnered lindy hop division you prefer.
  • You are invited into invitational if you are a judge, invited by the organisers, if you placed in All Star Strictly or Mix and Match previous year or Fast and Furious 1st place.
  • If you don’t place in invitational this year you can compete in all star following year, unless you’re invited again.
  • Invitational contestants will judge each other.
  • Judges can compete in any invitational competitions as well as in the following competitions: All Star 60s Showcase, Heel Slide, Trio Challenge. They can also compete in Shag, Blues, Balboa depending on their background and specialism
  • The criteria for ‘placing in a competition’ includes any regional, international or semi-informal lindy hop competition.
  • The number of finalists for any division will be between 5 and 7 depending on the judges’ discretion and the number of total entries
